Our Story
1983
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and First United Methodist Church joined forces to create a place for people of Henderson to come for financial aid.
Adopted the name “Outreach”.
1984
First United Methodist was deemed “headquarters” since they had a second telephone line.
Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church joined Outreach.
Each of the 3 churches agreed to give $500 per month to Outreach.
First United Methodist designated the fourth Sunday of every month as Hunger Sunday, and half of that offering went to Outreach.
1985
Chapel Hill Methodist Church was interested in what these 3 churches were doing and decided to open a food pantry and add to Outreach.
Immanual Baptist Temple got involved with Outreach, holding meetings to try to recruit volunteers.
1986
Outreach moved into the old PB&S Chemical Company building at 1100 North Adams, which had been offered for use free of charge by Ray Preston.
An initial Board of Directors was established. Those members were Les Hudson, Pat Klinger, Mary Herrera, Jean Tillotson, Ron Graul, Carolyn Gregory, Jan Kenney, and Jane Kennedy.
Pat Klinger, Mary Herrera and Jean Tillotson petitioned the State of Kentucky for Articles of Incorporation for Outreach to be called “Henderson Christian Community Outreach”, as an official corporation.
1989
The PB&S Chemical Company building went up for sale early fall. Outreach was blessed with a new rent- free building donated by Dudley Everson, located at 418 Seventh Street.
1997
HCCO relocated to 422 Seventh Street, next door to their previous location, rented from Billy F. Herron.
Henderson businesses stepped up to help make the new location more user friendly. Barry’s Pharmacy donated cabinets, First National donated four three-drawer filing cabinets, an adding machine, IBM electric typewriter, and a chair. Glen Mabry, the then-president of the board, donated a chest type freezer.
HCCO was being supported by 25 local churches, civic groups, Sunday School classes, church women’s groups, as well as individual donors.
2015
Once again, the location that HCCO was using was being sold.
2016
Relocated to 700 North Green Street.
2019
An anonymous family gifted HCCO a plot of land on Fifth Street.
Design plans started for a completely new building. Tim Skinner at Skinner Design and Associates created plans.
2021
A permit for construction was issued for 509 Fifth Street and foundation work began.
2022
Building at 509 Fifth Street was completed and HCCO moved in.
September 22: Henderson celebrated HCCO’s new building with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
